Basics

Internet

You should have at least an ADSL connection (>5Mbit/s) for video chatting & zoom sessions. All the zoom courses will be recorded. You will have access to the course’s video after the fact. on this website, as well as on gather (if you have registered before April 16th).

Computer

You will need your own computer to use the school tools through your Internet connection and 20 virtual machines will be online for the practice sessions.

Gather town requirements

First of all, use Firefox ! gather.town is known to have small issues with other browsers (safari is known to have problems…). → https://www.mozilla.org/firefox

Direct link to the gather.town virtual space: Gather

When you have created your account and avatar, you will jump in the gather.town map.

Moving your avatar can be done using the arrows or the letters (just like in good old video games!).

Chatting with someone is done by moving your avatar close to her/his avatar. Sound and video will activate below a certain distance.

Interacting with items is done using the key.

Don’t hesitate to move around, try out and experiment with items in the gather.town e-world!

Software

You will need the following software installed on your computer prior to starting the school. Please install them well in advance of the school (let’s say 1 week before at least) and try them out so that when the school starts, you will not be first-time-debugging them.

  1. zoom will be used for lectures and practice sessions

  2. Firefox is needed for gather.town

  3. x2go will be used for the connection to the virtual machines (user accounts and servers information will be distributed later). The x2go client is mandatory.

  4. JAVA is needed for most of the JMMC tools

More Advanced

If you wish to run the data reduction software or image reconstruction software on your own, this is also possible! But that needs some more horsepower. We will post some info there how to use the school tools.
